The IESM Concert 2025 – A Celebration of Talent, Language, and Joy

The Annual Concert of the Institute of English Studies Maharagama (IESM), held on the 15th of June 2025, was nothing short of spectacular. It was a day when creativity, language learning, and student expression came together on one vibrant stage. With months of careful planning and preparation, the event showcased the immense talent and spirit of IESM’s student body, academic team, and supporting staff.
The concert was held in two sessions, each filled with captivating performances, dramatic retellings, action songs, and musical numbers — all rooted in the power of the English language. Students from Grades 1 to 11 confidently stepped into the spotlight, demonstrating not only their linguistic progress but also their courage and teamwork.
Two respected members of the academic staff, Ms. Parami Kaluarachchi and Ms. Neeliya Seneviratne, delivered heartfelt speeches in each session. They emphasised the importance of performance-based learning, the role of English in a global world, and the dedication of both teachers and students. Their words added depth to the occasion and reminded us all why education at IESM goes far beyond the classroom.

A highlight of this year’s event was the selection of four outstanding student announcers, chosen from over 50 competitive applicants across the institute. These young voices brought elegance, clarity, and confidence to the stage:

Session 1 Announcers:
I.W.D. Kemitha Tharun Manthusha (Grade 10)
K.G. Lasini Sidaragana De Silva (Grade 8)

Session 2 Announcers:
K. Tharuli Ayansa (Grade 11)
Thivain Chandul Premathilaka (Grade 7)

Each announcer added polish and professionalism to the event. Their powerful delivery and command of the English language exemplified the very essence of IESM’s mission: to create confident communicators.
This year’s concert was a vivid blend of creativity and diversity. Students delivered a range of performances, including action songs, dramas, and solo and group musical acts, each reflecting the enthusiasm, fluency, and storytelling ability that IESM nurtures through its curriculum. From the retelling of beloved fairy tales to high-energy musical numbers, the event celebrated the joy of learning English through performance.
One of the most delightful additions to this year’s concert was the participation of our own teachers — a tradition that continues to remind us that learning is a shared journey.
A group of primary section teachers performed the song “Die with a Smile” by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, charming the audience with their harmonious voices and uplifting presence.

Another primary teachers’ group lit up the stage with a vibrant dance medley, featuring an energetic mix of popular Hindi songs, which had the audience clapping and dancing along in their seats.

Not to be outdone, the secondary section teachers presented a soulful rendition of “Dandelions” by Ruth B., delivering a beautiful and emotional performance that connected deeply with students and parents alike.

These teacher-led performances were a heartfelt reminder of the dedication and passion our educators bring not only to the classroom, but also to the wider life of the institute. Their willingness to step on stage and perform alongside their students reflects the strong bond and sense of community that define IESM.

The IESM Dramas

At IESM, dramas are traditionally the highlight of every annual concert — and this year was no exception. With intricate costumes, expressive acting, and impressive English dialogue delivery, the drama items left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.

Grade 10 brought to life the classic tale of Heidi, the heartwarming story of a young girl in the Swiss Alps. The students’ portrayal of the beloved characters was authentic, heartfelt, and filled with emotional depth.

Grade 11 took the stage with a magical performance of Cinderella. With wit, grace, and captivating stage presence, the students delivered a brilliant retelling of this timeless fairytale, reimagined through the lens of English education and theatrical excellence.

These performances weren’t just plays — they were celebrations of language, confidence, teamwork, and creativity. Both dramas were guided and choreographed by dedicated IESM educators who worked tirelessly to help students polish their performances, memorize lines, and embrace the art of storytelling.

A Special Acknowledgement

A heartfelt thank you goes to the teachers who went above and beyond to support the students behind the scenes. Ms. Sajini Hewawasam, Ms. Oshadi Kavindya, Ms. Thrishala Liyanagamage, Ms. Kaveesha Perera, Ms. Jayathma Charuki, Ms. Madavi Mendis, Ms. Kushani Sewmini, Ms. Radhika Dabarera, and Ms. Loshani Rajamanthri devoted their weekends to assisting with rehearsals and stage preparation for both Heidi and Cinderella. Their unwavering support and commitment made a significant impact on the final performances.
A very special acknowledgement goes to Ms. Lakshani Samarakoon, the Head of Grade 10, Grade 11 English Language, and Grade 11 English Literature, who choreographed and coordinated both dramas. Despite her demanding schedule — juggling her Master of Arts degree, her academic responsibilities at IESM, and her work at Musaeus College Colombo — she sacrificed her weekends to ensure the success of these productions. Her vision, dedication, and mentorship were central to bringing these stories to life on stage.
The 2025 Concert was not just a showcase — it was a celebration of unity, creativity, and the power of education. Parents, teachers, students, and guests came together to support one another in a display of joy, pride, and shared achievement. It reminded us why the arts are an essential part of language education and how IESM continues to empower students to find their voice, both literally and figuratively.

Here’s to many more magical evenings, memorable performances, and proud moments at IESM. 🌟
